The walk to the office was a bit chilly, but the clouds were quickly floating across the sky to the east. Blue skies and sun were forecast for the day.

The door closed behind me in a gust of wind.

Brandi looked up from her computer. “Windy out there, huh?”

“Just a little breezy.” I smiled at her and plugged in my laptop. “But I love the tinge of crispness in the air. The leaves will start turning colors soon.”

“I love fall,” Brandi said. “How’s your sister? Any news?”

I shook my head. “She’s still suspect number one.”

The door opened again, and Jonah stepped through. The door slammed shut closed behind him. “Good morning!” He took off his jacket and hung it on the coat rack. “We should probably do something about that door. The wind seems to have complete control over it. Maybe get a heavier one that can withstand the weather?”

“I’ll look into that.” Brandi scribbled a note to herself on the back of an envelope. “Clarity, tell us more about what happened at Karma’s house yesterday.”

Jonah sat at his desk and pushed his glasses up the bridge of his nose. “I know you got the laptop there, but you mentioned something about an incident. We never talked about it since we were knee-deep into Don’s emails.”

I filled them in on the happenings at the run-down home in a bad neighborhood.

“Wow,” Jonah said after hearing about the mistress and the two thugs that broke into the house. “If that’s what you experienced in just a couple of hours on one day, imagine how many other sketchy things Don must’ve been involved with. I wonder if more people have tried to break in after you left.”

I stopped for a moment and stared at him. “That thought never occurred to me. But you’re right. I should think about installing some security cameras near the doors and windows to see who else might be involved.”

“Costco has a couple of security camera packages. Some with four cameras, some with six. Pretty inexpensive too,” Brandi said.

“Thanks.” I sat down on my computer and pulled up the Costco page to take a look. “I’ll go purchase those this afternoon. But right now, I should be looking into my first client’s request. He thinks his wife is cheating on him.”

Jonah winced. “Sounds unpleasant. Good luck.”

“Yeah, good luck,” Brandi said. “But maybe that’s a good case to start with. It might be easier than solving a murder—though I’m sure you’ll be working on both at the same time.”

I nodded. “I’ll get right back to Karma’s case as soon as I do some digging into my client’s claim. I’ve got to pay the bills somehow.”

“I hear you.” Brandi turned back to her computer. “I’ve got to get back to work as well.”

I pulled out the notes I’d taken during my client meeting with Will Martinez. His wife, Belinda, worked part-time as the business manager at his restaurant. She also worked part-time in sales at a restaurant equipment company. It was the same kind of work that Don did.
